We are excited to present the return of the 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf Coins, available in 1oz Silver, 1oz Gold and 1/4oz Gold.
What is the Canadian Maple Leaf?
The maple leaf was first emerged as an emblem for Canada by the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste, an association celebrating the French Canadian language and culture.
At the 1834 inaugural meeting of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the maple leaf was one of the numerous emblems proposed to represent society. The first mayor of Montreal approved of the maple leaf, describing it as “the king of our forest; … the symbol of the Canadian people.”
The maple leaf slowly caught on as a national symbol for Canada. It appeared on all Canadian coins from 1876 until 1901 and remained on the penny after 1901.
The maple leaf was worn on badges by Canadian military personnel in WW1 and WW2 and featured on all Canadian Olympic uniforms in the London Olympic Games in 1908.
The iconic maple leaf was added to the Canadian coats of arms in 1921, and for the first time in 1965, it was raised as the centrepiece of Canada’s new National Flag.
The Coin Design
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the gold maple leaf coin in 1979. It is the second-oldest coin in the precious metals marketplace just after the South African Krugerrand, which debuted in 1967. The silver maple leaf coin was debuted in 1988.
The coin features the same popular design of the striking sugar maple leaf since it debuted. The sugar maple leaf is the most common species of tree found in Canada.
The design includes the new security features that got introduced in 2014. These include the background forming of radical lines on both sides of the coin. In addition, there is a newer privy mark on the bottom right of the maple leaf with a ’22’ inscription which is only visible under magnification.
Both silver and gold coins include the inscription ‘CANADA along the top border as well as the bottom, including the purity and the weight of the coin.
The silver maple leaf coin is manufactured to such a high standard of purity that it was the first bullion coin to achieve the heightened standard of “five nines” (.9999) pure.
