The Royal Mint‘s new coin collection celebrates the charming myths and legends that have been told for generations. The series first explored the folk hero himself Robin Hood and now has moved on to the heroine, Marian.
Who is Maid Marian?
Robin Hood is considered one of the best-known tales of English literature. The tale follows a skilled archer who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Robin Hood has proven to be one of pop culture’s most-loved folktales, through the countless portrayals in books, television and film.
Maid Marian is the heroine in Robin Hood and is often taken to be his lover.
Marian is represented within the tale as a courageous, strong and independent woman, which differs from the stereotypical damsel-in-distress. Marian’s character is important because she is one of the earliest examples of a strong female character in English literature.
The Coin Design
The coin depicts Maid Marian as alert and hawk-eyed as she observes through the trees of Sherwood Forest. She has her bow and a quiver of arrows on her back, ready for action.
Each gold 1oz Maid Marian contains 31.1035 grams of gold with a 999.9 purity. Along with each silver contains 31.1035 grams of silver with a 999.9 purity.
The Royal Mint has also announced that the final coin in the releases will feature Robin Hood’s other partner-in-crime, Little John.
